DescriptionRed oxide gives this oval shaped clay pipe its reddish color. A seam in the pipe indicates that it was probably made using a mold. A portion of the pipe surrounding the neck has been broken off and repaired with plaster. The pipe is marked in ink with the name "Tidwell." The first clay pipes, along with tobacco smoking, were introduced to Europeans by Native Americans of North and South America. Clay pipemaking later became an established trade.
Scope and Content NoteFound near Alto, Texas, this clay pipe dates to the Caddoan period in eastern Texas.
