SubjectFigure drawings
African Americans
IdentifierSHHX_0939
Scope and Content NoteNature sketches reminiscent of his love of hunting and all outdoor activities, early Texas and Civil War motifs, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, and the western frontier are all represented. In addition, there is a large body of work that represents his many international assignments and the locations where he and his wife were stationed, as well as ships and naval scenes. His drawings are notable for their vitality, often conveyed with surprisingly spare detail. He most often did pen-and-ink sketches finished with an ink wash, but his large body of work includes pencil, watercolor, pastels, etchings, and even oils.
