Flux Prescription by Dr. Meriwether

 

I allways (sic) in flux give 20 drops of Laudanum

with a teaspoon of salts every two hours untill (sic)

free watery discharges be produced.  then stop,

& if there are any griping pains after the oper-

ations are over give a dose of mophine (sic). Also keep

a red pepper poultice over the bowls & a hot rock

to the bottom of the feet. If the bloody discharges

return which they are apt to do, repeat the salts &

laudanum. use a powder made of opium & sugar

of lead. give one every time after an operation

untill (sic) they are checked. after you check the bowels

if the patient complains of much soreness with

occasional pain, turpentine with mucileage (sic)

is a good remedy. 5 drops 3 times a day & Diet

light. rice is the best. If the stomach is

much sick plaster it with mustard
