In this lesson plan, students will learn about the Angel of Independence, a monument located in Mexico City, as well as the meaning of the sculptures which surround it. They will also learn how it became a mausoleum for Mexican heroes who fought in the “War of Independence,” and about the lives and accomplishments of those buried there.

  • Learn about the participation of each of the heroes involved in the War of Independence.


  • Locate and understand the causes that started this war.


  • Learn about the relationships between the heroes located in the mausoleum

 

  • Ask relevant questions.


  • Collect, organize and process data.


  • Summarize.


  • Develop the four basic abilities of communication: read, write, listen and speak.
  • View the PowerPoint in order to learn about the history of the Angel of Independence and the names of the heroes now buried under the monument.


  • Read and discuss an article about the Mexican Independence War found on the Texas A&M University website. http://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/mexicanrev.htm

  • Write a script for a historically accurate play based on the War of Independence and starring the heroes mentioned as buried in the mausoleum monument.


  • Use a map to locate the route that this war followed. Maps may be found at Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection – University of Texas at Austin:  http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/atlas_mexico/independence_campaigns_1810.jpg

  • Have the students create a map of their own and color the route of the war.

Closing

Each group of students will present what they have learned about the lives of the heroes in front of the class. 

Evaluation

The teacher will evaluate the students based on their presentation and how well they understand the information presented to them.
