At the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler, Texas, Linda Kunze, curator of education talks about the otters on exhibit. The North American River Otter has a long, sleek body and short but powerful legs with webbed feet. This otter has an outer coat of course hair and a dense, thick undercoat which helps keep the animal dry and warm. They spend one-third of their lives in the water and their diet consists mostly of fish, crayfish, frogs, turtles, and aquatic invertebrates. They range throughout all of the United States and Canada, in North America, except for tundra, and parts of the desert southwestern U.S. These otters live in rivers, lakes, and streams, and in estuaries and both salt and freshwater marshes.
