At the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler, Texas, Jo had an opportunity to learn about the African Black-footed Penguin from Linda Kunze, the zoo's curator of education. The African Black-footed Penguin is found only off the coast of South Africa. Black-footed penguins lay two or three eggs at a time, and both parents care for the young. Their nickname, "jackass" penguin, comes from the loud, braying sound of their call.  Although this bird can’t fly, it is an excellent swimmer and diver, and its diet consists of small fish and squid.
