Dung Beetle
Dung Beetle

Dung Beetles are beetles which feed partly or exclusively on the feces of other animals. The dung beetle in this video is seen rolling feces into a ball, which is a common activity for most dung beetles. Once the feces is in a spherical shape, it can be used by the beetle as a food source or as brooding chambers. Beetles that do this are called rollers. There are also dung beetles that are called tunnellers, which bury the dung wherever they find it, and dwellers, which simply live in manure.

Dung beetles live in a variety of habitats, but tend to avoid very cold and very dry places. The eat the feces of herbivores and omnivores, but like the dung of omnivores best. They get all their nutrients from this diet and don’t even have to drink water to stay alive.

While eating feces may not seem like a very important – or very enjoyable – job, dung beetles play a vital role in agriculture. By burying and consuming dung, they improve the quality of the soil by fertilizing it. By eating dung, they clean up the area where livestock live and keep other harmful pests from inhabiting it. Many countries purposely release dung beetles on their land and in the crops because they are so beneficial to the ecology.
