Originally inhabited by the Otomí and P’urhépecha, it was defeated and Christianized by the Spaniards in 1531. Querétaro is known as the “cradle of Mexican Independence” because the rebellion was planned there. The state’ capital city of Santiago de Querétaro was the capital of Mexico in 1847, and it was in that city that the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. Querétaro is home to the Peña de Bernal, the second-largest monolith in the world.
