Oaxaca's rugged terrain, which caused various groups to develop in relative isolation from one another, is responsible for the cultural and linguistic diversity of the region. The land has been occupied by the Zapotec, Mixtec, Aztec, Spanish, and now Mexican peoples for over 9 centuries, and is home to one of the oldest human settlements in Mexico, the Zapotec village of Teotitlán del Valle. Today, Oaxaca stands out for its high concentration of indigenous communities. The principle industry of the state is tourism, featuring unique and traditional crafts, cuisine and festivals. The state capital is the city of Oaxaca.
