Nuevo León is almost totally surrounded by other Mexican states, with the exception of a 15 mile stretch that borders Texas. Its capital is Monterrey, the third largest city in Mexico. This state, unlike most of Northern Mexico, has been modernized by globalization. The city of Monterrey brings high numbers of tourists from the USA. Nuevo León boasts the highest standard of living in the nation. Called “the orange belt,” a rich agricultural core runs through the state, although the southern part remains rural and, because of the dry climate, it is difficult to grow crops or raise livestock there.
