Morelos was named after José María Morelos, one of the heroes of Mexico's War of Independence. Prior to the conquest, the state of Morelos was "Tlahuica" territory, and it has one of the richest archaeological zones in Mexico. Because of an ideal climate for agriculture, an extensive variety of vegetables are grown in the State of Morelos year round, including rice, melons, and tomatoes. The spas of Morelos, most of them with natural sulphide waters, beautiful hotels and swimming pools, are considered the best accommodations in Mexico. The pleasant climate in Morelos makes it possible to practice a wide variety of sports, giving the state and its capital the very well deserved titles of "Nearest Paradise" and "The City of Eternal Spring."
