Jalisco, Mexico

The western side of the Sierra Madre Mountains runs through Jalisco which gives it a variety of climates ranging from the cool, snow-topped Nevado de Colima Mountains, to the moderate high central plains, to the often steamy tropical jungles along the coast. Jalisco's indigenous population consists principally of Huicholes, Coras and Tepehuanes who, for the most part, still conserve their native languages and colorful dress. Jalisco is known for being the birthplace of mariachi music and tequila. Mexico's largest freshwater lake, Lake Chapala, lies within the boundaries of Jalisco. The Pacific coast of Jalisco is home to the world renowned resort Puerto Vallarta.
