México Distrito Federal, or México D.F., is the same entity as Mexico City (or Ciudad de México), the capital of the nation of Mexico. The city is the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere. The “floating gardens” of Xochimilco and the Angel of Independence are just two of the countless historical and cultural landmarks in the Capital. Mexico D.F. is one of the most important cultural centers in the world, home to more museums than any other city and almost as many theaters. Of course, as the capital of Mexico, the district is also home to government buildings and serves as the country's site of federal law-making.
