The American Civil War took place from 1861 to 1865, and was the only war ever waged on American soil. The war was fought between the United States of American (the Union) and eleven southern states that seceded from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America.
While the issue of slavery was one of the main causes of the Civil War, it was not the only one. Economic and social differences between the North and the South, states rights versus federal rights, the growth of the abolition movement, and the election of Abraham Lincoln as president - who was seen as anti-slavery and heavily favoring the interests of the North - all contributed to the start of the war.
TIDES has many primary resources from this era, including the Bone Family Papers, which contains letters written between Dr. Bone, who served as a surgeon during the Civil War, and his wife who waited for him back home.
