

Oaxaca, Mexico, July 2008
Art teacher Alisa Ripley and high school Spanish teacher Jana McLain traveled to Oaxaca, Mexico with Digital Projects staff to visit local artisans, explore the archaeological site
Monte Alban, and learn about cultural events such as the 2006 Teachers' Strike. Materials gathered on this trip will enrich existing TIDES lesson plans while also inspiring new projects and both local and global conversations with East Texas K-12 students.
The Caldwell Zoo
Art teacher Alisa Ripley traveled with Digital Projects staff to attend a TIDES Partnership meeting with the Caldwell Zoo curator of education, Linda Kunze. Photographs of the animals, taken by the Digital Projects team can be seen on the TIDES database, and videos will be coming soon!
The Tyler Museum of Art, December 2007
Art teacher Alisa Ripley traveled with Digital Projects staff to attend the First Friday Art Tour at
the Tyler Museum of Art, which was led by Stephen Vollmer, adjunct curator of Mexican and
Latin American Folk Art. After the tour, Alisa was able to ask Mr. Vollmer about various pieces
of art work in both the Silent Night Holy Night and Mexican Folk Art exhibits. DP staff filmed
these exchanges and they’ll be up in the Virtual Expeditions section of TIDES soon!
Cuernavaca, Tepotzlan, Puebla, Cholula & Mexico City, July 2007
Follow the adventures of Alisa Ripley (art educator), Jana McLain (high school
Spanish teacher), and Maru Avila (middle school English coordinator) on their
Art-based Expedition to Mexico! Material gathered from this trip will form the
curriculum for a fifth grade art class focused on bridging the cultural divide present
in one East Texas elementary school, and will serve as the basis for middle and
high school lesson plans.
