In this lesson plan, students will demonstrate an understanding of the artist George Louis Crocket by examining his works and discussing the artistic process. Students will view images of Crocket's work on the TIDES website and read about his life in the Handbook of Texas Online. Students will then choose one painting that appeals to them, will choose a song that they feel matches the feelings and emotions the sketch portrays, and will conclude the assignment by creating their own sketches of the world around them.

Share drawings and paintings by Crocket found on the TIDES site. Share information about Crocket’s life using the Handbook of Texas Online, which is also linked within the TIDES site. Discuss details in each drawing or painting with the students. Compare each drawing or painting with the others, noting details such as the presence of telephone wires. Show each sketch or painting one at a time. Have students share the feelings and emotions they experience when looking at each work of art. Write these down.
Have each student choose a sketch or painting that appeals to them. Students are to choose a song (GT students can write a song) that matches the feelings and emotions they believe the sketch portrays. Music and Art go hand in hand and this should be seen as an opportunity to get students to listen to other genres of music.
Once the assignment is completed, have the students sketch the world around them. Take the students outside and instruct them to sketch a scene, such as the school building, playground, etc – anything to “capture the moment.”
