Students will read/view/compare the primary source documents: “Child's Letter to Sam Houston” and the portraits of Nannie and her family. Make a timeline of the family using the captions under the photos. Answer the questions on the Houston Family Tree worksheet.
Write a Journal entry as if you were Nannie; include some information about her home and family using the photos on the TIDES website.
Read about Sam Houston in your Social Studies textbook, in the Handbook of Texas, and the Texas TIDES site. Make a list of major events of his life to include in a scrapbook. Use the Life worksheet provided. These events should include his family life, political life and his military career. Use the graphic organizer to keep track of these events.
