People of Mexican descent in Texas trace their biological origins to the racial mixture that occurred following the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 1520s ('Mexican Americans', Handbook of Texas Online)." During the Spanish Colonial period people of mixed Spanish and Indian blood were referred to as mestizo.

Mexico battled for it's independence from Spain for eleven years. Finally, in 1812, Mexico won its independence and Texas was under the control of the Mexican government. Much like the Spanish government, the Mexican government worried about expansion of the United States into its northern most holdings. The Mexican government began allowing European and Anglo American colonists to settle on their land. These new settlers brought their political views with them, and the Mexican government was then forced to face Spain's fears of political unrest. In 1836 Texas declared its independence from Mexico.
