The first people of African descent in the area we now call Texas came to the region as members of sixteenth century Spanish expeditions. Although African Americans have worked and battled alongside other Texans to build the state, they have also been subjected to slavery, racism, segregation and exclusion from political involvement. Throughout Texas' history, slavery has gone in and out of political fashion. The Mexican government allowed slavery because it was necessary to encourage southern farmers to settle in Texas. Slavery was an institution in Texas until June 19th, 1865 after the close of the Civil War.
